About Our Company

Microbial Insights (MI) is an environmental biotechnology company that develops and applies cutting edge genetic and chemical diagnostic tests to describe and quantify microbes and microbial communities. MI is dedicated to helping our clients identify and solve problems and issues with microbes.

Some examples of the services MI provides includes...

• Validating the presence and number of microbes involved in the bioremediation of groundwater and soil contaminants such as chlorinated hydrocarbons, gasoline, MTBE, and others
• Fungal and Mold testing for indoor air quality
• Assessing contaminated sites for the applicability of Monitored Natural Attenuation
• Investigating microbial fouling of municipal water treatment systems and other engineered applications
• Testing for the causes microbial corrosion
• Sourcing microbial contamination such as those involved systems processing and environmental health

History

Microbial Insights, Inc. was founded in 1992 as a technology transfer from research developed by Dr. David C. White, M.D.,Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee's Center for Biomarker Analysis (formerly part of The Center for Environmental Biotechnology), and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. MI was established to provide rapid, cost-effective methods to characterize microbial communities using biochemical approaches to analyze microbial lipids.

In 1998, MI became one of the first commercial laboratories to offer the use of DNA technology as a means of analyzing entire bacterial communities. Information provided by DNA analysis is complimentary to that determined by lipid analysis. A combination of the two methods provides a comprehensive assessment of microbial communities. For clients facing regulatory issues, results from these methods provide direct lines of support for making decisions.

Our professional reputation and unique technology make us an industry leader in the growing field of molecular microbial analysis. Our diverse clientele includes universities, environmental consulting companies, law firms, and governmental organizations from around the world.

Our research division develops new, cutting edge methodologies with support from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Energy (DOE), The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and The National Water Research Institute.

Situated south of Knoxville, Tennessee in the Technology Corridor, Microbial Insights occupies a 10,000 square foot, state-of-the-art laboratory. Our facilities include molecular, analytical, and culturing divisions to provide complete cost-effective, reliable data.
