| SIP - Applications |
SIP studies can be performed for any compound that microbes use as a carbon source. Some of the more common contaminants include:
Probably the most common application of the SIP method is to conclusively demonstrate biodegradation of a particular contaminant of concern under MNA conditions. For example, SIP studies have been performed to demonstrate that observed decreases in benzene and MTBE concentrations were due to anaerobic biodegradation rather than physical processes such as dilution. While demonstration of biodegradation under MNA conditions is a common application, the design of a SIP study is extremely flexible and can be tailored to address a multitude of site specific questions at each step in the decision making process including determining whether addition of amendments (nutrients, electron acceptors, etc.) will promote biodegradation.
